COLERAINE Inst rower Jonathan Mitchell has secured double silver at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Cork.
Jonathan, who is in year 13, won two silver medals with the Irish Junior 18 coxed four at the weekend's competition. Also know as the Junior European Rowing Championships, it was founded in 1985 and is open to rowers who are 18 or under.
On day one of the event Jonathan's crew finished four seconds behind Britain and half a second in front of Italy to collect silver medals. Day two saw Jonathan replicate his success from day one as he picked up a second silver medal.
Jonathan's achievements in Irish colours are even more remarkable given that he can row at Junior 18 level next season as well.
Also on the international front, Michael McNaul travels to Cardiff this weekend to represent Ireland in this year's Home International series where he will compete against the best oarsmen from England, Scotland and Wales. Both Michael and Jonathan were part of the school's highly successfully Junior 18 Quad 4 that finished in second position at the Irish Championship Regatta at the beginning of July.
Everyone at Coleraine Inst would like to wish school old boys Richard Archibald, Alan Campbell and Richard Chambers the best of luck as the complete their preparations for the Beijing Olympics.
