COLERAINE ice-skating star Jenna McCorkell has achieved her highest-ever placing in the European Championships, finishing in eighth position overall.
In seventh place overnight in Zagreb, the Belgian-based 21-year-old figure-skater – who won the British title for the fifth time earlier this month – completed a very satisfactory competition by beating her previous best of 14th in spite of a couple of falls.

It is the first time a British skater has made top ten for over 20-years since Joanne Conway, so this is a fantastic achievement.

Jenna had put in a spellbinding performance in the short programme on the Friday afternoon where she held the lead until the final six skaters, in fact only 100th of a point separated Jenna and the top six!

Finding herself in this position was a surprise for a delighted Jenna, who spoke to her PR Consultant from Zagreb following her fantastic display on the Friday evening.

"I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams to be sitting in this position, but whatever happens in the free I am delighted with how I have skated already.

"This is a huge thing for me, and I have proven to myself and everyone that I can compete along with the best in Europe at these Championships."

In fact Jenna had the highest technical score on the day beating the best in Europe including the current European Champion Carolina Kostner, and only three points separated third place to seventh place it was a lifetime best for Jenna in the Short Programme.

In the free programme Jenna made a couple of errors incurring a two point deduction but even with this she was still able to make top five in the technical score in the Free Programme.

Karin Rowlands, AKR Promotions, Jenna's PR consultant commented: "I have never seen Jenna skate so well in both programmes at this level, it was world class skating – wonderful she is nudging the top group now and has actually moved up an incredible seven places overall on last year in the European Championships!

"All the miles she has put in over the years on and off the ice has paid off and we are now starting to see Jen come off age.

"She looked so relaxed and confident, she is a very down to earth girl and is taking this all in her stride, with that said it is an extremely exciting time for British ice skating and everyone in Northern Ireland and elsewhere will be celebrating this fantastic achievement for one of our top sportspersons who has achieved so much at such a young age.

"This is just the beginning of the extraordinary story that is Jenna McCorkell."

Jenna is now in preparation for the World Championships at the end of March she is in excellent contention to make her goal for this season.
