ULSTER'S students have once again excelled on the waves, picking up titles at the Denny Irish National Surf Championships.
Environmental Science student Easkey Britton, picked up her 4th consecutive Irish title in the competition at Tullan Strand in Donegal adding this win to her victory in March at the BUSA (British Universities Sporting Association) Surfing Championshi
ps.
Following her emphatic victory Easkey said: "I didn't know I'd won till I got back to shore. Whatever the outcome, I knew I'd given it my all. I had a game plan before I went out and I stuck to it and luckily it paid off.
"Every year it gets harder, and the standard keeps going up - so I have to push myself to keep lifting my game. The challenge is dealing with the ocean conditions which are constantly changing, having the right mindset and staying focused."
This success has propelled Easkey on to the panel for the Irish national team, due to compete in the World Surfing Games at the Costa da Caparica, Portugal in October.
Ulster also had success in the form of former student John McCurry. John graduated last year with a BSc in Travel and Tourism Management, and picked up the Irish Longboard title, which also sees him selected for the trip to Portugal later this year.
John said: "It was great to get on to the Irish team. I won a Portrush event the week before the nationals, and then picking up the Irish title was fantastic - and guaranteed my place for the world championships."
