THE East Strand, Portrush has been selected as an official venue for this year’s World Police and Fire Games. From 1st-10th August 2013 up to 10,000 competitors and 15,000 accompanying supporters will come to Northern Ireland to participate in one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world.

The East Strand will host surfing and surf kayak events from 6th-8th August and beach volleyball from 5th-11th August 2013.

John Tully, Chief Executive, 2013 WPFG explained: “Each of the 42 host venues across Northern Ireland were selected following a comprehensive assessment process overseen by the WPFG Federation, the governing body of the Games. This included consultation with the local governing bodies of sport and the WPFG Federation to ensure that all the required criteria would be met and that competitors would enjoy the optimum experience in each sport.

“Coleraine Council is to be congratulated for East Strand being assigned an official venue and we are delighted to hand over this plaque to the Mayor in recognition of Coleraine Council’s participation in the Games.”

Councillor Sam Cole, Mayor of Coleraine Borough Council said: “This is great news to be able to host the beach volleyball and surfing events.  Coleraine Council supports some of the best beaches in Europe and has first rate facilities at East Strand, Portrush. We are no stranger to major events on the north coast, we can offer an experienced team, scenic location and unrivalled hospitality for everyone to enjoy during this great opportunity.”

The World Police and Fire Games is a biennial event which is organised for all “sworn law enforcement officers”, including police, fire, customs, prison service and some smaller enforcement agencies. It is the third largest international multi-sport event in the world after the Olympics and the World Masters. Northern Ireland will be only the third European host in the Games history which were last held in New York in 2011.
