Coleraine success at Northern Ireland Judo Trials

COLERAINE Judo Club was out in force at last week’s Northern Ireland Judo Trials at Longtower Activity Centre in Londonderry.

Stephen Cuckoo wiped the board with three good ippons (a 10 point score) in the Junior over 73kg category, winning the gold medal.

In the senior competition Stephen won a well-deserved bronze medal and just missed out on the silver, despite still being a junior.

Rebecca Cuckoo collected bronze medals at both the junior and senior competitions, though could have done better if she had not sustained a nasty shoulder injury in one of her contests.

Rebecca actually defeated the eventual gold medalist in an earlier round.

In the Senior event Philip Barnett fought like a lion and secured a comfortable silver medal in the under 100kg category, narrowly losing to a more experienced player in the final.

Also performing well was young Bradley Jackson (14) who is relatively new to judo and one to look out for in the future.
