Cunningham takes honours in Bann Valley race cyclist Cunningham

UEL Cunningham of Ballymoney CC Biesty’s Centra racing team won last Tuesday’s Bann Valley road race at Kilrea.

In a top quality field of over 50 competitors, including 2011/12 Bann Valley Classic winner and Uel’s team-mate Steven McAllister, the 2013 Bann Valley Classic winner Philip Bremner recent winner of the Carn Classic Gary Jeffers, top five stage finisher in the international Tour of the North 2012 and super fast finisher Jason Henry.

All were lined up in the scratch group who were given a handicap of 4 minutes to catch the three groups in front over the five laps of the Gortmacrane circuit. With vet rider and BCC Biesty’s Centra racing team mate Tony Blaney in the first group the pace was a fast and furious affair.

Two minutes forty with two laps to go, Cunningham, Jeffers, Henry and McAllister put the hammer down and at the bell the gap was down to 40 seconds.

With the field now altogether going into the last few miles, it was a twitchy heaving bunch of energy that descended into Kilrea. Philip Bremner launched an attack for glory and as the eyes were on McAllister to make a move, he feigned and attack across the road and it set up the launch pad for Uel Cunningham to chase down Bremner and win the Bann Valley Road Race.
