And who can blame him when you look at the striker’s record.

The Glaswegian’s most prolific spell came under Michael O’Neill at Shamrock Rovers when he scored 81 league goals in 119 games.

His three-and-a-half year spell at Portadown was also full of goals, this time he helped himself to 53 in 114 league games.

So Kearney is hopeful the goals will continue to flow from the 32-year-old in a Coleraine shirt.

“When you looked at the table last year we were about 15 or 20 goals behind the other teams,” he told Times Sport.

“Where do you get those goals from? Well I think Gary is a perfect player to get those goals for us.

“He’s excited by the challenge, he knows we’re a young fresh side.

“If I was him coming away from today’s game I’d be happy when you look at our wide players there’s a lot of creativity there, and we did create a lot in the first half that was just crying out for someone like Gary to put them away.

“So as I say he should be pretty excited with the number of chances which will come his way here.

“Gary has a serious knack of scoring goals and he has done all his career.

“He’s 32 now and he has all that experience and guile, and all those wee things you can’t coach.

“We’ve never really had that type of a player, I’m looking forward to seeing him in action and popping up and picking up those goals by just knowing where he needs to be.

“Goals are so important, they win you games. When you look at today’s game Gary Twigg could have been the difference of three points or not.

“It may be an okay performance from the team but someone like Gary can be the difference by taking a chance which wins you the game.”
