Inst victorious in Irish Society Shield

Coleraine Academical Institution Under-16 football team travelled to the Riada Centre to meet Limavady High school in the final of the Irish Society Shield last week.

CAI had the majority of possession in the first half playing into the wind and nearly scored after 10 minutes when Ross McDowell’s shot from the edge of the 18 yard line cannoned off the upright. Further chances then fell to both Chris Cunning and Mark Edgar with only the tight defending by Limavady making sure neither was successful.

A more determined and less defensive Limavady started to take the fight to CAI after the break, but failed to ever trouble the back four. A break then from Inst led to a corner which after hitting the bar, fell favourably for Mark Edgar who slotted it home.

The Limavady right winger forced a good save from CAI keeper Reece Gordon. With Limavady threatening to score CAI found their passing game again and broke on the right with Scott Moore and Mark Edgar chasing down a loose ball. Mark found himself one on one with the Limavady keeper and kept his composure to slip the ball past him to make it 2-0.

With five minutes left the CAI players took their foot off the pedal a little and allowed Limavady more room than they had all game so far when a saved free kick was not cleared fast enough and Limavady forced the ball home. Inst held on though to secure a 2-1 win.
