Kearney disappointed not to win game

ORAN Kearney was left scratching his head in disbelief as the Bannsiders had to make do with a point against Glentoran on New Year’s Day.

The hosts fought back from a goal down to seal a 1-1 draw thanks to Shane Jennings’ strike but they should have taken all three after missing some gilt-edged chances.

“I’m left wondering how we didn’t win,” admitted Kearney after the game.

“And that’s been the case after quite a few of our performances this season. The game gathered pace as it went on and I suppose with the number of games both teams have played recently, it took both of us a while to get it out of our system.

“There was nothing at all between the two teams in the first half, but Glentoran snatched the lead with a very well-taken strike. But to be fair to our lads, having come out of a poor performance on Saturday, and then to go behind in that manner, I felt our response in the second half was super.

“We did miss a lot of chances, but you can’t allow yourself to ever think that it isn’t going to be your day, that the ball just isn’t going to go in. We’ve got plenty of good players who know how to score goals; Curtis had an off day, but on another occasion he could have been walking off with the match ball.

“Shane has had a difficult time of it with injuries this season, but he’s ice-cold in front of goal. He scored a goal in similar circumstances towards the end of last season to help us get a 1-1 draw against Glentoran and it was as good a finish today.

“He’s still a young player, and at this time he probably has more of an impact coming off the bench than starting games, but he has an awful lot of quality, particularly in his finishing and thankfully he came up trumps for us today.”
