GOLF: G-Mac runner up at Chevron
PORTRUSH's Graeme McDowell narrowly failed in his bid to win the Chevron World Challenge in California.
G-Mac fired a two under par round of 70 to finish the tournament in second place behind winner Jim Furyk.
McDowell was only called into the 18-player field at Sherwood Country Club last Monday, when tournament host Tiger Woods withdrew citing injuries sustained in the car crash that made headlines around the world.
A brilliant third round 66 from McDowell gave him the 54 hole lead alongside Y E Yang but while Furyk carded a superb last round 67, McDowell failed to catch fire and finished one shot short.
However, the 30-year-old did have the consolation of moving into the top 50 of the world.
A birdie on the final hole saw him finish the year in 38th place which should guarantee him a spot in the Masters in April.
Graeme's final competitive event of the year will be the Greg Norman hosted Shark Shootout in Florida which starts on December 11.
