KARATE: Coleraine girl is crowned UK champion
YASMIN Geddis has just been crowned UK champion following an outstanding performance at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham .
Througout her seven bouts, 15-year-old Dominican pupil Yasmin fought off fellow competitors from all across the UK in the Five Foot Three and over category .
Her success follows on from her being awarded the Junior sportswoman of the year award in her local area last autumn.
Yasmin's teacher, Mrs Diamond, spoke in glowing terms of a pupil who works hard to strike a successful balance between her school work and extra-curricular sports, and as a pupil whose passion for her sport merits this fantastic accolade .
Yasmin had trained rigorously for the UK finals both individually and within her local club the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club established by her dad, Terry Geddis.
Yasmin has been involved in martial arts since the age of six under the expert guidance of Terry as her Sensei (coach).
Inspired by her UK success, Yasmin now hopes to compete in the European Championships in November where she will face formidable competition from cadets from over thirty countries .
Dominican principal, Dr Bob Cummings, pictured here with Yasmin, praised her "fantastic success" in achieving her dream of being UK champion and on behalf of all the staff and students of Dominican wished Yasmin continued success in the sport.
