The University of Leicester, Roger Bettles Sport Centre, was the venue for the 2014 Boys’ Brigade National Badminton Finals hosted by the East Midlands District on behalf of the English Region.
Those earning the right to contest for the title of BB National Champions were 32nd Nottingham and 4th Southampton from England, 16th Newtownabbey and 1st Garvagh from Northern Ireland with 1st Largs and 65th Edinburgh representing Scotland.
These four man teams, playing six boys’ doubles games in each match, were drawn into two mini leagues playing round robin matches to establish the four teams that would go through to the semi-finals.
1st Garvagh Boys had won the British title in 2013 and the team of Paul Moore, David Moore, Michael Torrens and Jamie Cunningham were determined to retain the trophy.
1st Garvagh started well with convincing 6-0 wins over 32nd Nottingham and 1st Largs in the morning session. With 1st Garvagh winning their mini league their semi-final opponents were local rivals 16th Newtownabbey. The semi-final was a very close match which Garvagh eventually won 4-2, setting up a final against 65th Edinburgh
In a hard fought final the score was 2-2 after the initial four matches. 1st Garvagh won the fifth match to take the score to 3-2, but the dreaded play-off looked likely as the Garvagh boys were 5 match points down in the final set. However in a show of sheer determination the Garvagh pair of David Moore and Jamie Cunningham won the next seven points to win their match and the National Trophy. The final score was 4-2 to 1st Garvagh.
The National trophy was presented to the 1st Garvagh’s team captain Paul Moore by Michael Elliott the Competition Organiser.
