One young boxer who is setting his sights on a medal at the World Police and Fire Games is 24 year old local man Adam Deighan.

A member of Coleraine Amateur Boxing Club and the NI Prison Service team, Adam has been boxing for over eight years and has watched many fights at the Ulster Hall but this is the first time he’ll be stepping into the ring at the venue and he can’t wait for all the action to begin.

“I’ve been training hard for the Games at my local club, Coleraine Amateur Boxing Club and coaches there have been putting me through my paces two and three times weekly,” he said.

“I’ve been doing a lot of padwork at the Club and I also train hard at lunchtimes at our NIPS gym undertaking body conditioning work and weight training. Part of my training regime also includes running on the local beaches near Coleraine and of course the recent fantastic weather has made that part of my training a real pleasure.

“As we’re currently in the close season, my last official fight was in March but in the past year I’ve only lost one competitive bout and I’m very pleased with my training and preparation to date. Having been a spectator at the Ulster Hall, the World Police and Fire Games are giving me a fantastic opportunity to actually now be in that famous ring and it’s a moment I certainly won’t forget!”

“I’m a recent recruit to the Northern Ireland Prison Service and the Games will be my first outing on behalf of the Boxing Team.

“But I really hope to make everyone proud and I’m certainly aiming high and I hope that lots of spectators will come along to the Ulster Hall to cheer on all the local teams. I’m sure my family and my fiancé Hannah will be there to support me!”

Since he started boxing Adam has competed at county, Ulster and All Ireland levels and has won the County Derry Championship in his ‘welter weight’ category in 2010 and 2012 and has also reached the Ulster final.

Eighty-nine competitors from 22 countries will take to the ring at Belfast’s iconic Ulster Hall during the five day Danske Bank supported World Police and Fire

The World Police and Fire Games Danske Bank Boxing programme begins on Monday 5th August at the Ulster Hall with finals expected to take place on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th August. There will be Novice, Intermediate and Open competitions in each of the weight categories.
