Coleraine Bowling Club hosted a very successful ‘Opening of the Green’ on Friday evening with a large crowd down to see the official club opening.

Honorary Secretary Jordan Dallas welcomed all members to the club for the annual opening, stating that 2013 is a special year for Coleraine as it is their 110th year in existence. He went on to say that a lot of hard work had went on at the club during the off-season to further the facilities, forge new sponsor partnerships and attract new members before offering a warm welcome to the new members, dignitaries from the council, NIPBA and sponsors.

A minute’s silence was held in respect of members Tommy McCandless, Tommy Mitchell, Sammy Moore and Brian Henry who had passed away since last year.

As is the tradition at Coleraine, the secretary called upon the President’s wife Jenny to officially open the 2013 season by throwing the silver jack and first bowl, which was presented to the club back in 1903. Lady President Nora Lafferty then threw the first bowl to open the Ladies section. Vice-President Basil Kennedy presented Jenny with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the club and the Ladies presented Nora with a gift for her part in the opening.

The club flag was presented to President Sam McArthur by Past President Liam Hickey before being raised to the top of the mast in the presence of Mayor Sam Cole, NIPBA representatives and members of the management committee.

Speeches were then carried out by President Sam McArthur, Lady President Nora Lafferty, NIPBA Vice-President Kieran Adams, NIPBA Ladies President Betty Linton and Mayor Sam Cole before Hon. Secretary Jordan Dallas closed the proceedings with a number of announcements before grace was said and a wonderful meal was had by all.

Coleraine Seniors will host Larne in a friendly at Lodge Road on Saturday at 2pm, however, the club will be hosting an ‘Open Day’ for beginners or seasoned bowlers beforehand at 11am with Domino’s Pizza taking part as they are officially unveiled as the new club sponsor. Joggy Dhillon from Domino’s Coleraine has planned a number of fun events for bowlers and spectators alike so why not call down to Lodge Road on Saturday at 11am to see what all the fuss is about?

Coleraine kick off their Senior League campaign on Saturday 20 April at home to Ballymoney. Dunluce travel to Letterkenny while Portrush have a bye.
