Eleven-year-old Dylan McCloskey created his own piece of history as he was crowned the Shotokan Cup Champion for the first ever time.

This is not only a first for him but also a first for the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club in which he trains four times a week under the instruction of Sensei Terry Geddis 5th Dan KUGB and Sensei Yasmin Geddis 3rd Dan KUGB.

This year has been one of the best in Zanshin history and also for Dylan as he has won every single competition he has been entered into, along with being the youngest 2nd Dan in the UK after grading in April.

Dylan, Coleraine Sports Council’s Junior Sportsman of the Year 2013, can now add Shotokan Cup Kumite Champion to his ever growing collection as earlier this year he was successful in winning, the KUGB British Championships, Liverpool Youth Championships and the Irish Championships.

Dylan’s success has not come easy as he is 11 he can only compete in selected competitions throughout the year as the minimum age to compete internationally in Shotokan Karate is 14.

This has not deterred him though as he travelled over to watch the World Championships in Liverpool’s Echo Arena in 2013 and cannot wait to perfect his technique into becoming a World and European Champion.

Dylan’s win has secured an ongoing streak of wins for the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club as every competition that the team have entered they have had at least two in the final with at least one being crowned champion, which for a small squad is very impressive.

Dylan has been selected to compete in the Junior Northern Ireland Team after successfully training in the Junior Squad Sessions which are held by ZSNI in order to choose their competitors over the last two years.

During the lead up to the National British Championships Dylan, not only trained with his fellow Junior Squad Team, he also asked to be allowed to train with the Senior Squad. With Dylan being under five feet tall and the biggest Senior Squad Member being Zachary Geddis at 6”4’ this proved to be challenging, but nothing that he could not handle.

“Dylan is a very talented individual with ambition that can, with the correct training and dedication, continue to make him a success within the world of Shotokan Karate Competitions,” said Chief Instructor Sensei Terry Geddis 5th Dan KUGB.

Dylan is currently preparing for this year’s Karate Northern Ireland Open Championships.
