FOLLOWING the London 2012 Olympic Games, Team Handball or Olympic Handball is it is also known, is coming to Coleraine.

The fast action sport, identified as one of the main legacy sports from the London Games, is being organised by Coleraine Borough Council’s Community Sports Programme in conjunction with the University of Ulster. The programme is supported by Coleraine Borough Council’s Good Relations programme.

The game is the second largest team sport in Europe behind Football and the 7-a-side format provides end to end action. Each session will be led by qualified Handball coaches and anyone, male or female, aged 16 years and over can attend.

Stephen McCartney, Community Sports Development Officer at Coleraine Borough Council said: “Handball is a brilliant team sport, it is really easy to pick up and is great for fitness, along with improving handling and catching skills.  Anyone that has played Rugby, Football, Cricket, Netball, Gaelic Football or similar sports will take to it straight away.”

A ‘Come & Try It’ session is organised for Monday 4 February at the University of Ulster, Sports Hall in Coleraine from 7.30pm until 8.30pm and this will be followed by six further coaching sessions every Monday. Everyone, including complete beginners, is very welcome to come along.

For further information regarding the Coleraine Community Handball programme, contact Stephen McCartney, Coleraine Borough Council on 028 7034 7234 or email stephen.mccartney@colerainebc.gov.uk. This project has received financial support from the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM).
