David Magee Cup carried away by Porter

Forty points from sixteen handicap Ronnie Porter lifted the David Magee Cup at Rathmore GC on Sunday.

Sixty brave souls ventured out on a wet and windy day and Ronnie won the day by a single point from Victor Bow. It all came down to the final hole when Ronnie knocked in a two for a birdie, a three there would have cost him his win as Victor would have had the better back nine score in the resulting countback. Ronnie took 19 points from the opening nine with no birdies and very few unnecessarily dropped shots. His inward nine was similar until the decisive two at the end and gave up another 21.

Victor Bow had scored 18 out including a triple bogey seven at the par four eighth. Disaster struck at the par five tenth when Victor failed to register a score but he recovered composure to slot in a nice two at eleven. The seven and the blank proved to be Victor’s downfall, but he had claimed second spot by himself by finishing two clear of Stephen Murdock on 37. He also registered a blank, at the third, in a font nine of 18 points.

He must have been in a very tight fourball as he had to finish out at thirteen for a ten before going on to score 19 more points for his 37. Stephen Crockett was two behind with 35 points from his handicap of 18. a blank at the fourth restricted his scoring to 14 for the first nine and, while he had a couple of slips with a triple and a double bogey in his back nine, he carded another 21 points to get third place on countback.

Billy Clarke took Best Gross category for his effort of 71. His opening bogey was levelled up by a birdie four at the fourth before dropping another shot at the seventh. Billy ended the opening nine holes one over par 36. The par four tenth fell to a birdie four and again Billy had two bogeys for a return nine of 35.
