Six of the best for local pupils

Millburn Primary School and the Christie Memorial Primary School are the Coleraine Kwik Cricket Champions for 2016.

The festivals run over two days staged at Coleraine Cricket Club were a fantastic opportunity for boys and girls to show off their skills from the coaching programmes organised by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council with support from Cricket Ireland.

In the Boys event Millburn overcame the strong challenge of Christie Memorial PS in the final . With teams also coming from Killowen PS, Irish Society PS, Ballysally. Kilrea PS, Castleroe, Portrush, Harpur’s Hill PS, Damhead PS and Mill Strand, resulting in over 120 boys taking part.

The Girls Festival again proved very popular and Christie Memorial where pushed all the way by a very talented Harpur’s Hill team who took runners up. Also competing on the day where Killowen PS, Damhead PS, Castleroe PS, Kilrea PS and Millburn PS.

The competition was organised by Coleraine Cricket Club, Causeway Coast and Glens Council’s Sports Development Unit and Cricket Ireland.

Millburn and Christie will now have the opportunity to represent Coleraine at the National finals at Stormont Cricket Grounds, Belfast on the 15th June.

Stephen McCartney, Community Sports Development Officer, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council said, “Both events proved how popular the sport of cricket is in primary schools with over 200 children taking part. The Coleraine Kwik Cricket Festival has now been running for 24 years.”

All the children now have the opportunity to join Coleraine Cricket Club’s junior coaching programme on Friday night’s 6.30pm-7.30pm.

You can also enrol on Council’s Summer Recreation programme ‘Cricket Coaching course’ with forms now available at Coleraine Leisure Centre.
