Teams are made up of children competing across three different age groups – Under 17, 15 and 13. The Under 15’s had a really good day only losing one set out of six. The first match against Alpha was very closely fought with some very good performances from the younger Under 13 players. The match finished 6-4 in favour of Smashers. Against Ards it was the turn of the Under 17’s to claim the victory as once again Smashers ran out 6-4 winners. The final match was against Banbridge and a 9-1 scoreline not only secured the match but also the overall championship.

Smashers players owe a lot to coaches Brent Haslett and Shirley Jackson who have been working towards this event all year. The club is also blessed with great parental support. Special thanks to David McIlmoyle of DANDLMAC Associates Ltd who handed over a generous sponsorship cheque.

Some of the Under 13 players also benefitted recently from Ulster badminton coach Leslie Dewart. Leslie was instrumental in getting the Coleraine development squad up and running. The children were also treated to some coaching from Niall McVeigh who has won World and European para badminton championships in his SS6 class for short stature players as well as numerous singles titles around the world.
