Portrush welcomes World Police and Fire Games advance party

International representatives of the World Police and Fire Games enjoyed a fact-finding visit to Northern Ireland last week, in advance of the Games which will take place here this August.

The competitors travelled here from the US, Canada, Germany, Spain and GB, as guests of Tourism Ireland and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

During their time here, the group visited key sporting venues across Northern Ireland which will be used during the Games, as well as some of Northern Ireland’s tourist attractions including Titanic Belfast, the Ulster American Folk Park and the Giant’s Causeway. Whilst on the North Coast they called in at Royal Portrush Golf Club, where they heard about the club’s history and recent successes including last summer’s Irish Open.

Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland CEO, said: “We were delighted to host this group of international competitors and are confident that, through the positive experience and warm welcome they received during their time here, they will become ambassadors for both the Games and Northern Ireland.

“It is estimated that Northern Ireland will welcome in the region of 25,000 visitors – including 10,000 competitors from around 70 countries – for the World Police and Fire Games. This prestigious event presents us with a fantastic opportunity to highlight Belfast and Northern Ireland around the world as a wonderful holiday destination, as well as a top location for sporting events. We are encouraging visitors to the Games to extend their visit, with lots of suggestions and ideas for things to see and do here.”

The 2013 World Police and Fire Games will take place in Northern Ireland 1st-10th August and will feature 57 sports played at 40 venues. It is a biennial event, commonly referred to as the ‘Olympics’ for serving and retired police, fire, prison and border security officers.
