SOCCER: Sir Alex backs'FC Macosquin'

SIR Alex Ferguson has lent his support for a campaign to establish a thriving new football club in Macosquin.

The Manchester United boss sent his best wishes to the club's new committee which were elected at the Bushtown House Hotel last Thursday night.

Sir Alex was replying to a letter from the club's new secretary Eleanor Cole.

Not only has Macosquin got the support of the Old Trafford supremo but IFA vice-president Raymond Kennedy was in attendance at the inaugural AGM last week.

Raymond conducted the election of office bearers that resulted in Jackie McAfee being voted in as chairman, Noel Kennedy vice-chairman, Lyle Henry treasurer and Eleanor Cole as secretary.

It was agreed that the new club will be called FC Macosquin.

Chairman Jackie McAfee told Times Sport: "We are very grateful to Raymond for giving up his time to carry out the election of office bearers.

"Raymond is giving us his support and hopefully he can use his influence for our benefit.

"On behalf of FC Maocsquin I'd also like to thank our vice chairman Noel Kennedy for the generous donation of our first team kit and two footballs. Tommy Doherty has also provided us with a couple of footballs as well."

As well as the main office bearers, a committee was elected and includes Sheriff Mairs, Jim White, Jeremy Farrell, Ricky McAleese and Davy McNeill. Others may be co-opted onto the committee in the future.

Officials are already working closely with Coleraine Borough Council regarding improvements to the village pitch and the provision of adequate changing facilities.

The club will make its first appearance in the LMA Summer League but next season may enter either the Coleraine Morning League or the Hutchinson Tiles League.

Plans are already in the pipeline to run the Balmer Cup at the start of July. Watch this space for further details.

The next meeting of FC Macosquin will take place in the Bushtown House Hotel on Thursday, April 28 from 7.30pm.
