Coleraine and District Motor Club Karting ‘Young Guns’ team have been very busy over the past few weeks with events at Athboy, Nutts Corner and Santry race tracks. Local lad Sam McDonnell is starting to make headlines with some stunning results in the past three race meetings.
Victory at Athboy gave him confidence going into the though Ulster Championship round on Saturday at Nutts Corner but with a full grid of Cadets he would need to be on top form to get a result. Things could not have went better for the Coleraine flyer as he won all three of his heats and after a race long battle with his main championship rivals, Dylan Tuite and Shay Burns he crossed the line first to take an impressive win.
The team then travelled to Santry race track just outside Dublin for round four of the Tulyallen Kart Club Championship with both Sam and Dunloy’s SeOg Martin hoping for more success. Santry is a very demanding track and drivers need to be brave to commit to some fast flowing corners to get the best out of their karts.
Sam and SeOg both made good progress in timed qualifying but with over twenty drivers on the grid this was not going to be an easy day. Sam set the pace again taking three heat wins with Martin consistently in the top five giving him a good grid position for the final.
When the lights changed for the final race McDonnell and Martin both got away with the leading pack and after some close racing McDonnell took the win with Martin second making it an excellent weekend for the CDMC Karting team.
Action this Saturday 1st June moves to the ultra fast Bishopscourt race track when the Northern Ireland Championship continues. If you are interested in joining the team the Northern Ireland Karting Association will be running a Kart Experience day at Nutts Corner on Sunday 9th June contact Stephen on 07718876385 to book your place.
