The funding also provided a boost to the community cinema’s plans to take part in Cinema Day with a screening of classic French film, ‘A Trip to the Moon,’ directed by George Melies.

The community cinema which is based in the 1930’s built Art Deco style Playhouse on the town’s Main Street, has become a key fixture in community life since it was established in 2014. The group’s hope is that the cinema can provide a valuable community space offering an accessible and neutral cultural venue for the wide range of people living in the Portrush and Causeway Coast area.

Portrush Film Theatre took part in ‘Cinema Day’ on August 29th which in conjunction with Film Hub NI and Film Audience Network, saw a Northern Ireland wide celebration to mark the 120th anniversary of the first ever film being shown in 1896 at Belfast’s Alhambra Theatre.

Speaking about the Micro Grant and the season ahead for the cinema, Jacqueline Casey from Portrush Film Theatre said: “We are delighted to have received funding from the Community Foundation. The money will give us the financial stability to devise a comprehensive season of film events rather than having to plan one film at a time given the expense.

“Receiving this grant means that we can look forward with confidence to taking part in the Atlantic Sessions music festival this Autumn and Cinema Day on 29 August.

“As part of Cinema Day, we showed a French film from 1902 called; ’A Trip to the Moon,’ and we dressed up to celebrate the different eras of cinema, it was great fun and we hope the community really enjoyed it.

“The Micro Grant has provided us with just the perfect amount of funding. Small arts groups like ours can be overwhelmed with some of the bigger grants available, whereas we know exactly how we will use this funding, and it will support rather than overwhelm us.”

The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland established the Micro Grant Programme in recognition and celebration of the contribution of voluntary groups and people to society and the need for a simple application process for small amounts of funding.
