This way for Game of Thrones

To coincide with season six of Game of Thrones, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council commissioned a series of interpretation signs to be installed at or near each of the filming locations in the area.

The project is in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen, who provided the images and the detail for the scenes which are depicted on each of the ten signs that have been put in place at Ballintoy Harbour, Larrybane Quarry, Garron Road, Murlough Bay Car Parks, Cushendun Caves, Portstewart Strand, Downhill Beach, Swann’s Bridge, Limavady and perhaps the most famous of them all, the Dark Hedges.

Richard Williams, CEO, Northern Ireland Screen said, “The creation of a cluster of signs across Northern Ireland is the latest initiative in our screen tourism strategy.

“We have been working with the various councils to produce a branded family of explanatory panels which means each site will be instantly recognisable as a Game of Thrones filming location.

“We are delighted to see that Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has got all their signs in place and when visitors come to this beautiful part of Northern Ireland, they can read about which scenes where filmed here.

“As season six rolls out and we can identify more of the amazing locations which Northern Ireland offers, we will be working again with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and all the other councils on new signage and other screen tourism ideas.”

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, councillor Michelle Knight-McQuillan told The Coleraine Times this week: “Game of Thrones has been a spectacular success for tourism in the Causeway Coast and Glens and Northern Ireland as a whole – it has opened up the area to new target segments and markets, with a huge interest from as far afield as China, India and Brazil.

“Coupled with the new campaign featuring the doors carved from the trees blown down in Storm Gertrude at the Dark Hedges in Co Antrim, developed jointly by Tourism Ireland and Tourism Northern Ireland and created in partnership with HBO, we are expecting another bumper year for Game of Thrones tourists, inspired to visit to see the stunning and spectacular locations seen in the show.”
