Packed programme of events to light up Portstewart this week

The annual Red Sails Festival in Portstewart began on Sunday.

Here’s our day by day guide to what’s on.

Tuesday 26th July

12 noon: Children’s Sandcastle Competition, The Crescent. Judged by Anthony Hawkins.

2.30pm Mr. Hullabaloo’s Children’s Workshop (Primary School Age), Portstewart Main Town Hall. This year’s workshop involves making colourful fish puppets. One hundred available places.

3.30pm Mr. Hullabaloo’s Pirates Adventure Story Telling Show, Portstewart Main Town Hall

4.00pm Live music: Blue Ridge, Crescent Bandstand. A recently formed local band playing country, middle of the road pop, rock n roll and Irish.

4.15pm Cafe Music Session - Kyle Graham, McLaughlin’s Bakery. An acoustic mix of modern pop and classic rock.

7.00pm Live music - Darren Keiran, Crescent Bandstand. Providing a fresh approach to country music Darren has taken the scene by storm.

7.30pm Live music - Ritchie Remo, Crescent Bandstand.

7.15pm Cafe Music Session - Eamonn Doherty, Roughan’s Cafe. Another mix of modern pop songs from one of are popular performers who took part in the Red Sails Battle of The Bands 2015.

9.15pm Cafe Music Session - Jack McNaul, Wills Café. Jack is a local man who plays an upbeat mixture of pop and country spanning from Zac Brown to Katy Perry.

10.00pm Krazy’s Davy’s Karaoke, The Anchor.

10.00pm Red Sails Cocktail Competition, The Anchorage. Watch some of the best barmen and barmaids battle it out for the title of Red Sails Cocktail King or Queen. Free admission. Host Brian Moore.

Wednesday 27th July

Swim For Portstewart - Moville,Donegal to Portstewart. Heather Clatworthy, originally from Portstewart and now living in England will be attempting to repeat an historic swim by Mercedez Gleitze in 1929.

Multicultural Day at The Crescent Bandstand

1.00pm Fun With Drums. A chance for children and adults to take part in some festival fun with drums. No experience necessary.

2.00pm Innova Irish Dance Company.

2.30pm Altagore Irish Folk Rock Band.

4.00pm Street Theatre.

4.15pm Cafe Music Session - Sings & Strings, Warke’s Deli. Modern upbeat tunes with classic rock, soul, blues, country and pop.

4.30pm Chinese Fan Dancing, featuring Wiehong Tu.

4.40pm Ibuko Taiko Japanese Drum Display. Ibuki Taiko are the first Northern Ireland group to train in this ancient Japanese art.

4.55pm Polish Dance Display, featuring Wiehong Tu and Konrad Pawlaszek

7.00pm Bright Lights Scottish Dancers. The Bright Lights dance group presents a unique fusion style of all dance forms, coupled with colourful costumes.

7.15pm Cafe Music Session - Michael E Thomas, Roughan’s Café. Very popular local singer/guitarist who will be performing songs from his vast repertoire.

7.30pm Willie Drennan Ulster Scots Folk Band

9.15pm Cafe Music Session Sings & Strings, Wills Cafe.

Thursday 28th July

10am-5.00pm World War I Exhibition, Portstewart Main Town Hall. Includes photographic panels and a slideshow. The public is invited to bring along photographs and documents to be scanned and added to the slideshow. There will be a special World War I Memorial Book, in which members of the public can record details of family members, who took part in the war effort, adding copies of photographs and copies of newspaper articles.

2.00pm The Bright Lights Scottish Dancers will perform a 15 minute Battle of The Somme/World War I commemorative display.

1.30pm Red Sails Singer/Songwriter Competition, Crescent Bandstand. A free to enter competition for musicians/singers/bands/solo artists. No Age restriction.

4.15pm Live Music From Cellar Door, Crescent Bandstand. A mix of Classic and Modern Rock.

4.15pm Cafe Session - Andy Rogers, Warke’s Deli. Groovy Ethno-Celt Folk Pop.

7.00pm-9.00pm Junior Fishing Competition, Portstewart Harbour. Entry free and there are great prizes to be won. First prize includes a fishing boat trip for two sponsored by the Boy Matthew.

7.15pm Cafe Music Session - Mississippi Boombox, Roughan’s Café.

7.00pm Portrush Music Society - Excerpts From Oliver, Crescent Bandstand.

11.00am-11.30am Seaside Rhythm and Rhyme for babies and toddlers, Portstewart Library.

12noon Children’s Pavement Art, The Crescent. Another free to enter kids event. Chalk provided.

12noon Children’s Red Sails Got Talent registration, Crescent Bandstand. Entries will be taken from 12 noon for the competition, which starts at 2.00pm. The competition is free to enter. There are two age categories 5-10 years and 11-16 years and there are prizes for the first three in each section. Dancers will need to provide a CD or pen drive with their dance music. Dance performance will be at the concrete area beside the bandstand and dance routines must be suitably safe to perform in this area. Sponsored by Maxwell Freight Services.

2.00pm-5.00pm Painting On The Prom, Near the Harbour. Artists! Join other artists for some sketching and painting near the harbour.

4.00pm Street Theatre- Captain Logy, Crescent Bandstand . A show of juggling, comedy and danger. You may even learn a thing or two!

4.15pm Cafe Music Session - Shane Rodgers, Warke’s Deli. Winner of The Red Sails Battle Of The Bands Competition 2015.

7.15pm Cafe Music session - Claire Hill, Roughan’s Café. Claire is a 23 year old acoustic-folk singer-songwriter from Portstewart.
