Urban sports showcase
Young people from the Coleraine area will be showcasing urban sports in the town centre this Saturday, September 28.
The event, ‘Street Jam’ will take place in the Diamond Centre from 1 to 4pm and will showcase a range of urban sports including skateboarding, street art and cage footballas well as offering an opportunity for novices to have a go.
Urban Street Jam is organised by a group of young urban sports enthusiasts who have recently established the Causeway Association of Urban Sports (CAUS).
Through CAUS, young people have been lobbying decision makers and campaigning for the construction of an outdoor skate park in Portrush
for a number of months. Indeed CAUS was established in April 2013, which was movement on from a former group known as Skate Coleraine, established in 2009.
However, there is a history of initiative for lobbying for a skate park as far back as 1997. CAUS’s aim is to provide a forum and voice for young urban sports enthusiasts after they encountered difficulties in establishing a local space for them to meet and enjoy their sport.
Neil Murphy, local Youth Worker who has worked with CAUS explains: “It is great to be involved in Urban Street Jam this year and I am looking forward to seeing what young people can bring to the Coleraine Borough through their gifts and talents.”
Materials for most events will be provided.
Please note that skate boards will not be provided so please bring your own if you wish to particpate.
