Then the competition started to heat up with people of all ages posting their photos online of how tall their sunflowers were growing. Tips were shared and a beady eye was kept on the front runners as the deadline of July a6 pproached.

A proud Jack Donaghy submitted his sunflower which had grown to 63 inches, becoming the Great Sunflower Grower!

Coming in second was Peter Mullan from the Blue Gate Lodge Residential Home and third, Barry Mullan, his grandson.

“This was a great competition to run allowing people of all ages to put their focus on growing something and seeing it change and develop over the months as well as allowing some friendly banter and connections online,” said Karin Eyben of Garvagh People’s Forest Project, Garvagh Development Trust.

“Massive thanks and congratulations to all for participating.”
