A Brazilian woman has pleaded guilty to charges of brothel keeping and controlling prostitution.

Mother of three, Arlete Gomez (41), with an address at Victoria Street in Ballymoney, was arrested at her home in February, following a search of a suspected brothel in the Long Commons area of Coleraine.

Two females detained at the Long Commons address received police cautions.

On Monday, Gomez appeared before North Antrim Magistrates’ Court via video link from Hydebank prison.

The court heard that Gomez, who has lived in London for some time, had been taking up to 20 percent of the other girls’ earnings, and that she had been working as a prostitute herself in the area. District Judge Des Perry sentenced Gomez to three months in prison, suspended for three years. Defence for Gomez said that on her release Gomez would not be back in the Province.
