David Harding has spoken of his shock resignation from the Ulster Unionist Party to become an Independent in the new local Council

The former Coleraine mayor - who led his Coleraine party to a memorable performance in last year’s elections for the new Causeway Coast & Glens Council - said he felt he would be able to represent the area better free from the restraints of the party system.

His decision to quit will mean the the UUP will hold nine seats in the new Council to the DUP’s 11.
