PORTRUSH Lifeboat came to the assistance of a 29 metre, 180 tonne dredger with mechanical failure one mile north of Ballycastle last Friday morning.

The dredger ‘The Jenny T’ had had a mechanical failure and had three men on board. The winds were south westerly and the sea conditions were slight and this helped the entire operation.

The crew arrived on scene very quickly and were able to get a tow line onto the dredger. By this time the Rathlin Ferry was also alongside and was able to offer assistance to the crew.

After an hour, the dredger was towed to the safety of Ballycastle Harbour.

Portrush Coxswain, Des Austin, said: “The good weather conditions made this a safe relatively easy tow, even though the dredger at 29 metres was bigger and longer than vessels we would normally

assist. Thanks also to the Rathlin Ferry and crew for their assistance.”
