Portrush Raft Race volunteers “marooned” in Victoria Square!

A number of Portrush Raft Race supporters have found themselves marooned this week - in Belfast’s Victoria Square.

This is the 31st year of the Portrush Raft Race which raises funds for Portrush Lifeboat Station and this year a raft has travelled to Belfast to showcase the family fun day.

The Raft Race sponsor this year is Victoria Square in Belfast and to celebrate this partnership, a raft along with a desert Island has been transported to Belfast!

Volunteers from the Raft Race committee, in partnership with a local Portrush building firm Houston Homes, have constructed a desert island, complete with sand, bucket and spades and deckchairs in the middle of Victoria Square.

This will give Belfast City a flavour of a family fun day that encourages all age groups to build their own rafts and take to the sea in Portrush all for a good cause.

Celebrities such as Pamela Ballentine, Alan Simpson, and World Junior Surf Kayak champion Andy McClelland and lifeboat crew member at Portrush have all volunteered to take part in sandcastle building competition on the island.

Portrush Raft Race this year will kick start the Jubilee celebrations in Portrush. This year It takes place on Saturday 2nd June with the Olympic Flame arriving on Sunday 3rd.
