Local author, Bernie McGill gave a talk to Coleraine Probus Club entitled ‘The Butterfly Cabinet: the journey of a book’.

She spoke of the background of the Cromie and Montague families of Portstewart and about the incident that inspired the novel - the death of a young child at Cromore House in 1892, and the subsequent imprisonment of the child’s mother, Annie Montague.

Her fascination with the story led her to research the trial as documented in old copies of The Coleraine Chronicle.

‘The Butterfly Cabinet’ was named last year by Julian Fellowes (writer and creator of Downton Abbey) as his novel of the year in The Guardian.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Ian Scott.
