The ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ song - adapted from the Gala hit Freed From Desire – was officially released by chart toppers Blonde on Tuesday and took just hours to storm into the iTunes top 10.

The band, who have had top 20 hits with collaborations with Craig David, Melissa Steel and Alex Newell, found the terrace anthem so catchy that they agreed to transform it into a proper track.

Will Grigg, from Solihull in England plays international football for Northern Ireland.

The ode to the Northern Ireland striker began life as a chant at Grigg’s home club Wigan Athletic - and is now raising money for a seven-year-old Wigan fan Joe Kendrick who siffers from an extremely rare genetic disorder called NKH.

So, with the help of Latics super fan Sean Kennedy – whose videos of him singing the song ensured it spread like wildfire – and club chairman David Sharpe, who described the song as “the greatest chant ever known to man”, they put together some new lyrics and have recorded the song with vocalist Zak Abel.

The track has been credited to DJ Kenno - aka Sean - rather than Blonde and its popularity has been evident with sales rocketing.

“The whole thing came about because of a tweet about the chant,” said Jacob Manson, who forms one half of Blonde with pal Adam Englefield.”

The track is already in the top 10, toppling the likes of Justin Bieber, Coldplay and Little Mix... and it’s still climbing.

Rather than profit from the song, the band and Sean have kindly offered all proceeds to Wigan charity Joseph’s Goal.
