Call of Duty: Warzone players can get a free weekend of Modern Warfare’s multiplayer - here's how

Fans of Call of Duty: Warzone - the free-to-play battle royale variant of the game released by Activision a month ago - are in for a treat this weekend.

To keep players entertained during continued global lockdown, they're giving fans free access to the competitive multiplayer component of last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Here's everything you need to know about it:

Modern Warfare's multiplayer will be available for free to anyone with the Warzone client installed on their console.

You'll be able to get access to Modern Warfare's multiplayer through the Warzone lobby in the form of the “Stocked Up/Locked Down” 24/7 playlist.

What's included in the free multiplayer?

Though this weekend's offer is being touted as "free" multiplayer, players won't have access to the majority of the content that paid-up fans can expect to see.

But what it does include, is two maps - Atlas Superstore and Shoot House - and players will get Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, and Headquarters modes.

During the event, progress gained in one mode will carry over to the other.

When is the multiplayer free?

The free weekend begins at 6pm BST on Friday 3 April  and runs until Monday 6 April 6pm BST.

How do I download Warzone?

To get your free access to Modern Warfare's multiplayer, you'll need Warzone installed on your console.

You don't need to own Modern Warfare to download Warzone; it's free to download regardless of whether you already own Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

To download it, simply go to you chosen platform’s store (Playstation Store, Xbox Store or Battle.net) and search for “Call of Duty: Warzone” then download it.

This method does require a hefty download – somewhere in the region of 101GB. Depending on broadband speeds, it could take a few hours. With the huge numbers of players that are likely to be flooding the servers, it’s also possible we will see the odd snag.

However, Activision have been kind enough to include something to keep players busy while they wait – the first 20GB of the Warzone download comes with an offline version of Modern Warfare’s Gunfight mode, giving gamers some AI opponents to take on while the rest of the file downloads.

Warzone players who decide to purchase Modern Warfare at a later date will also be able to carry over anything they have unlocked in the free-to-play game.

Warzone sees the Call of Duty franchise going head to head with the top “battle royale” videogames on the block once again.

It allows up to 150 players to take to the battlefield in teams of three, duking it out in a variety of game modes.

The most straight-forward version of this is the Battle Royale mode where each team simply aims to be the only one left standing, with the battlefield gradually shrinking around them to keep the combat intense as the numbers dwindle.

It takes place on the massive “Verdansk” map, which Activision boasts as having “over 300 points of interest” and multiple named locations – exactly the kind of wide, varied environment which battle royale games thrive in.

It also features a host of different vehicles, including helicopters and cargo trucks, for those looking to zip across it at a greater speed.
