Coleraine suffer narrow defeat in Enniskillen

Coleraine First XV narrowly lost out at Enniskillen on Saturday and had to be satisfied with a losing bonus point.

It was only the team’s second match in this year’s Kukri Ulster Rugby Championships and they held the lead for much of the game.

A late try brought the visitors back to within two points but they ran out of time to change the outcome, Enniskillen 22-20 Coleraine.

In the game the first points went to the home side after the award of a penalty try following a protracted series of scrums on the Coleraine five-metre line. 7-0

Coleraine went on the attack from the restart and Cameron Fulton slotted the ball between the posts for three points after a penalty award. 7-3

After half an hour Coleraine capitalised on a strong attacking position, Brian Hughes making the final yards to score under the posts. Fulton was on target for the extras. 7-10

Approaching halftime Enniskillen scored an unconverted try and within minutes Coleraine replied with another well struck Fulton penalty, leaving the scoreline 12-13 at the break.

In the early stages of the second half Coleraine were twice reduced to 14 men following yellow card decisions. The home side took their opportunity scoring a converted try and claiming three points from a penalty. 19-13

In the closing minutes Coleraine again attacked and Bradley Dempster made a scything run to score a great try, converted by Fulton. Although Coleraine attacked, they were unable to find another score and the final tally was Enniskillen 22-20 Coleraine.

Also on Saturday Coleraine Seconds travelled to Instonians in Belfast. The Bannsiders produced a dominant performance and a resounding 12-39 win.

This weekend Coleraine First XV travel to CIYMS in Belfast whilst the Seconds and Thirds host Omagh 3s and Larne 3s respectively.
