COLERAINE Strikers Disability Football Club travelled to the Billy Neill complex on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th June to compete in the UK wide, IFA Community Cup.

Coleraine Borough Council, in partnership with the Club, Irish Football Association and University of Ulster Coleraine were competing at their first ever Community Cup and put in some great performances over the two days.

The strikers A team, competed in ability category 3 winning all their matches on the first day and received promotion to ability category 2. However the team crashed out in the group stage losing their final group match to eventual winners Guernsey Football Club.

The strikers B team had a difficult first day losing three of their four matches in ability category 4, however they turned things around spectacularly on Friday winning all but one group which was drawn and progressing to the semi-finals where they defeated a very strong St.Raphaels Utd team from the Republic of Ireland 3-1 to progress to the final.

Unfortunately they came up against Llandudno FC from Wales who were just too strong on the day defeating Coleraine 3-0.

Coleraine Borough Council Active Communities coach, Jonathan McFadden, said: “For Coleraine Strikers Disability Club to finish runners up in the first outing at this UK wide competition was an excellent result.

“Special mention must go to Jonathan Fillis, Joshua Selfridge and Christopher McCallion who between them scored 16, 9 and 8 goals respectively, which is a fantastic achievement.

“The IFA fully fund the programme and Coleraine Borough Council provides a head coach to the Club to facilitate the competition while the University of Ulster provide an assistant coach. This partnership has proven extremely successful and I would like to thank all those involved.”

The club is open to anyone with physical and or learning disabilities, to join the junior section, 7 years old to 15 years old or the senior section 15 years+.
