Derry City legends to meet Portstewart Select

Derry City Legends will be the team to take on a Portstewart Select side in a bid to raise funds for Tiny Life.

Organised by former Portsteawart player and manager Frankie Moffatt, the game will kick off at 3pm.

In the line up for the Portstewart side, which will be managed by ‘Basher’ and Terry Irwin will be current management team - Gary Taylor, Daid Moffatt and Aaron Forgrave alongside other well known faces who have pulled on the sky blue of the Seahawks including Kenny Woodrow, Toasty Shaw, Steven Quinn and Anthony Gilmore.

Speaking to Times Sport ‘Basher’ said that he was looking forward to the game: “There has always been a very close link between Derry City and the north coast - many of the players taking to the field on Sunday will have played for Coleraine - Liam Coyle, Felix Healy, Peter Hutton, Tommy McCallion, Eddie McCallion, Stuart Gauld and Gary Beckett.

“There are some great players in the line up and most of them have very strong Coleraine connections.”

Admission is £5 with all proceeds going to TinyLife.

Portstewart 0 -1 Queen’s

Meanwhile, Portstewart entertained Queen’s in their final home game of the season on Saturday.

It was a poor start for the home side who didn’t create much in the opening minutes. Queen’s took advantage and went in 1-0 up at the break.

Portstewart looked like a different team in the second half. A few changes saw Forgrave and and Doherty moving into a central midfield role and they caused plenty of problems for their Queen’s counterparts.

Darren McGowan and Josh Rohdich were also introduced.

Portstewart controlled the second half with chances coming from Hanson, Turner, Doherty and Neill, despite their dominance the homeside were unable to take anything from the tie.

Ports boss Gary Taylor was disappointed with the performance on his side: “We were very poor in the first half, and it took a lot of talking at half time to get the boys going.

“We were a different team in the second half, we had lots of poccession but we left ourselves too much to do. Queen’s had the goal advantage and they sat back and defended very well.”

Portstewart face a long trip to Armagh this Saturday.

“Armagh play tonight (Tuesday) and if they win they will have won the league. They also play in the final of the Intermediate Cup next Monday so it’s hard to know what kind of team they will field. They have been the best team in the League now for the past couple of years, and I feel that they deserve promotion. We will have James Peden and Owen Moody back again for this week, so we should be able to field a much stronger team that we did against Queen’s.
