There is a new face at the helm of Coleraine Rugby Football and Cricket Club. for this forthcoming season at Sandel Lodge.

A lifelong member of the club, George Neely recently took on the role of President of the Rugby Avenue sporting club.

It is an onerous task but George is relishing the challenge.

He said: “It is a great honour to be elected as President of the club. I enjoyed many years playing rugby here and now it is wonderful to represent the club in a different role.

“I am looking forward to representing all sections of the club and to enjoying all the sporting activities and events throughout the year. I am particularly looking forward to welcoming many friends and visitors to our club and extending our usual hospitality to them.”

There are many aspects to the club and George will be representing them all in his new role.

He said: “The club is going from strength to strength and we have a vibrant membership across all sections. Cricket is to the fore at the moment and is fielding teams in competition across the province.

“In the hockey section there is great excitement with the council development of an all-weather pitch across the road at Rugby Avenue. It means that, for the first time, hockey will be played at the club and everyone is looking forward to a great season and a lot of support on the sidelines

“The rugby section is undergoing a period of change, with the Firsts adapting to life in Junior 2 after relegation, but there is a very positive attitude in the section with a new coaching set up and strong recruitment in the off-season. Training will soon be under way and I am looking forward to a competitive season for all teams.

“It is a proud boast of the club that we have thriving youth and mini sections across all sports. We are committed to developing young local talent and providing first class sporting activity for all children and young people. It is a joy to see so many young people enjoying sporting activities all year round.”

Clubs thrive on success and support is fundamental to that.

George said: “I am asking all members and friends of the club to turn up at games involving all the club’s sections and give your support to all the players. They give up a lot of time and effort for their pride in representing their club and they deserve all our support.

“We also have plans to develop the social side of the club and there are some great events in the pipeline for members’ enjoyment.”

George finished on a welcoming note: “I wish all the club’s teams every success in their campaigns this year and I look forward to meeting players and families, members, friends and visitors at the club throughout my year as President. Everyone will be made very welcome.”
