Coleraine Ladies Firsts won the league on Saturday and earned promotion to Senior Two despite falling to defeat at the weekend.
The local girls went down 2-1 to Kilkeel but league rivals Saintfield also lost this weekend, and after Enniskillen conceded their remaining games Coleraine are now the outright winners of senior 3 guaranteeing them promotion.
The match started well with Coleraine attacking and were rewarded with a penalty corner which Sue Nutt converted. Kilkeel stepped up a gear and started to mount pressure on the Coleraine defence, strong tackles from Sharon Kennedy, Susan Chapman and Claire Adams kept Kilkeel out of the circle.
However, using a quick ball Kilkeel won themselves a penalty corner which they convened bringing the score line to 1-1. Just before the half time whistle Kilkeel scored once again taking it to 2-1.
Coleraine started the second half determine to regain the lead. Using the skill and speed of the left and right forwards Naimh Lockhart and Naimh Tweedie, Coleraine created multiple opportunities but unfortunately none were converted.
Coleraine would like to thank all coaches and supporters who came and watched the match. Despite losing the game winning the league was a fitting tribute to former club sponsor Norman Hutchinson who sadly passed away last week. Everyone at Coleraine Ladies Hockey Club would like to pass on their condolences to the Hutchinson family at this sad time.
