Cup winners sign off their league campaign with a win to secure a fourth place finish

Coleraine claimed five points after a hard fought two shot victory against City of Derry last Saturday afternoon at a mild Lisnagelvin Green.

The Bannsiders were guaranteed fourth place in the Senior League table and would be out to sign off with a victory to follow on from last week’s historic IBA Senior Cup win at Belmont, whilst the Londonderry men were assured of seventh place in the league standings.

The visitors opened up an early six shot lead on their opponents before the home team reduced the deficit to five shots at the halfway stage.

City of Derry soon turned the tables on the Lodge Road men as they carved out a nine shot lead with five ends remaining, however, the newly crowned Irish champions wouldn’t be denied victory as they eventually sealed a dramatic two shot victory in the last end to clinch the five points.

It was a good five points for the Bannsiders as they signed off their Senior League campaign with a fourth league victory on the spin to finish in fourth position.

The Lodge Road men will look to have a tilt at the title next season, however, it’s been an exceptional season with the IBA Senior Cup returning to Coleraine for the first time since 1921 and the second time in the club’s history.

Meanwhile, there was cup disappointment for Coleraine B last week. The Lodge Road second string were also taking on neighbours Ballymoney in the final of the Cupples Cup last Thursday night at Portglenone. But it was the Toon boys who were celebrating this time around as they beat their Coleraine counterparts by six shots.

Coleraine Bowling Club will be hosting their annual East Bann v West Bann charity match on Friday evening at 7pm. All proceeds will be going to the club’s chosen charity this year, ‘MS Society NI’. Members are asked to write their name on the sheet at the clubhouse to confirm availability. It’s also Finals Day on Saturday, with the action getting underway at 10am.
