Saturday saw Portrush travel to Comber to face North Down in Senior One.

The game was another important opportunity for Portrush to gain vital points in order to ensure their survival in the brutal league.

Portrush drew first blood with some great play up the pitch allowing Brent Smith to find Aaron Kerr in the circle and he deflected into the North Down goal.

As the second half commenced it was North Down who found their form and early in the first half were able to find three goals.

A deflated Portrush however were able to find their feet and began to shut the door on North Down with some good saves by Matt Jordan and clearances by Ryan Smith and Richard McNabb. The Ports won another short corner from which Aaron Kerr found the net for a second time in the match as John Dillons shot was deflected into the goal.

It seemed only a matter of time before Portrush would find the equaliser, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be found as North Down struck their fourth goal making the game 4-2.

Nevertheless Portrush carried on and eventually they were able to make another breakthrough with Brent Smith finding Graeme Christie at the back post giving the North Down keeper no chance.

With such a close game both sides were on edge as Portrush were looking for the equaliser but after the 70 minutes it wasn’t to be. In another hard fought and frustrating loss a disappointed Portrush were defeated 4-3.

With Portrush continuing to challenge teams coach David Price will strive to achieve glory in the season through more hardwork and training from the squad. Weather permitting Portrush will host league leaders South Antrim this Saturday at Quay Road and all support is welcome!
