It may come of no surprise to hear Rory McIlroy holds the course record for Royal Portrush.
But it may surprise quite a few to learne he was just a teenager when he achieved it.
McIlroy was just 16-years-old and still an amateur when he carded a scintillating 61 in the 2005 North of Ireland Championship.
“I was still lying in my bed last night thinking about it,” the Hollywood youngster told reporters the next day.
“To shoot 61 anywhere is unbelievable but to shoot it round Royal Portrush is even better.”
McIlroy is now looking forward to The Open returning to Royal Portrush in 2019.
He said: “To hear that the Open is going there in 2019 is a dream come true. I never thought I would be able to play an Open Championship at home. I’m really excited.”
I wonder will he get close to his course record in four years time!
