Mountsandel public meeting begins a series of events

Coleraine Rotary Club will this month begin a series of events to raise local awareness of the incredible history of Mountsandel.

The first of these will be a Public Meeting in Coleraine Rugby Club on Thursday, February 17 from 7.30pm.

The special guest wil be Professor Peter Woodman. Emirtius Professor of the University of Ulster, Cork, who, with a team of archaeologists in the 1970s, uncovered evidence at Mountsandel of a Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age settlement dating backt to 7600-7900BC.

The public is being invited along to hear this fascinating story and learn more how to get involved with the campaign.

Following that meeting a Coleraine Town Festival with themed Mesolithic games, Stone Age costumes, food tasting and family fun will be held on Saturday, April 23 from 11am to 4pm.

Coleraine Rotary Club will also be holding a number of events in local schools to explore the history of the town.

Children will visit the historic forest and Mountsandel site and hunt and search for flints, recreating the life of our earliest ancestors 9,500 years and also be invited to enter an arts competition.

In addition Rotary is planning a Family Run or Walk of the two bridges in the town - so watch this space for further details.

Professor Woodman will again visit Coleraine in the Spring to launch his new book on Ireland’s settlers and present the prizes to the schools competition winners.
