Churchlands record best ever day at Ulster 9 Counties Championships

Churchlands Golden Gloves have recorded their best ever results at the Ulster Nine County Championships with three winners.

The Coleraine club took their biggest contingent of boxers ever up to the Championships on Saturday 13th February.

Michael Dallat, Patrick Hayes, Ross and Ben Henderson and Matty Boreland all fought under the Churchlands banner in the final day of action at Hazelwood Integrated College.

There was an impressive entry of 177 boxers. On the first day a total of 26 contests was decided. A further 30 were decided on Sunday 7th.

The championship concluded with 42 finals on Saturday 13th.

Michael was unlucky to miss out on a place in the finals as he was beaten in the semi finals.

Patrick Hayes just missed out on a title as he was beaten by a more experienced opponentin the 17-year-old category.

Oran Keddle of St Bronagh’s is a former Eurpean quarter finalists but Patrick gave him three good rounds.

Ross and Ben Henderson though were victorious in their respective finals.

Ross defeated Oisin McHugh of Finn Valley 2-1 in the 50kg weight division.

Ben was also a winner as he saw off Townland’s Conor Lenaghan 3-0 in the 42 kg division.

Matty Boreland made it three titles for Churchlands with victory over Mark McMonagle in the Boys 17 category.

“This was an excellent performance by all our lads at the Championships,” coach Micky Fleming told Times Sport.

“We are absolutely delighted for all the hard work they have put in and now look forward to the Irish Championship in March.”
