Anchors aweigh for Rathlin

It’s anchors aweigh on Friday 22nd May as the Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival opening weekend kicks off with a fancy dress parade followed by the uniquely traditional blessing of the boats at the Marina in Ballycastle.

Throughout the Festival you have the opportunity to get involved in the diverse programme of events.

You can soak up the exhilarating atmosphere of the Sailing Regatta at the Ballycastle Marina, or marvel at the traditional boats, the currach and dronthiem.

There’s the opportunity to combine sailing and nature with a boat trip to Rathlin and investigate seabird colonies. There are many taster lessons, from kayaking to dingy sailing or you could channel your inner James Bond by powerboating!

There’s a fascinating Ship Wrecks Exhibition on Rathlin, where you can view remarkable shipwreck artifacts and salvage, or you can listen to one of the many expert talks on “Arrow of Portmoon” the famous racing skiff and the Maritime Heritage of Ballycastle at the Library in Ballycastle.

The Cookery Demo with Derek Creagh from the Great British Menu and Harry’s Shack at the seafront is not to be missed. Afterwards, you can taste old and new whiskey blends at the Bushmills Whiskey Tasting before taking a stroll around the market in Ballycastle for unique crafts and artisan cuisine.

Liz Weir and children’s storytelling will entertain everyone. There are plenty of fun activities to participate in and you could even unveil your hidden talent in the Street Entertainers’ competition.

Of course no festival is complete without music and with music sessions from The Maguires, Cormac Ó’Briain and the Armagh Rhymers, and concerts with Frances Black and the fabulous Runabay the Festival is sure to create the right sound!
