Clubsound make a welcome return to the Island

THE longest running band in Ireland, Clubsound, will be making a welcome return to Lisburn this month when they celebrate their 40th anniversary in the Island Hall on Monday December 27.

Join Clubsound for a trip down memory lane on Shankill Airways, where the in-flight entertainment will include Andy McFadden and his funky wee five piece band and of course the Ballymour Grousebeaters.

All the comedy classics will be combined with the superb musicianship of George Jones, Alan McCartney, Barry Woods, David McKnight and Jimmy Black. A night of good music and great Ulster craic is guaranteed.

The band are celebrating their fortieth anniversary with a tour of theatres up and down the country and the party will end in Lisburn just after Christmas.

George Jones, a founding member of Clubsound back in the 1970s, said the whole band were enjoying being back on the road again.

"We did a tour for the 30th anniversary and we thought that was it," he continued.

"We play now and then for special occasions. We played at the Opera House in February for the 40th anniversary and thought it would be a one-off but then we decided to take it around the provincial theatres and ended up doing twelve shows.

"We have been going around all the theatres and it has been wonderful."

Clubsound brought some light relief to Northern Ireland during the Troubles and with the recession hitting many people hard now, George and the band are hoping their brand of humour will raise a smile or two during these tough times.

"Ulster humour never really dies or changes," continued George.

George and the band are thrilled to be returning to Lisburn and are looking forward to seeing their local fans again.

"To go to Lisburn for the last night is fantastic," he said. "It has always been a brilliant crowd. It has been a wonderful year and the reaction has been great. This has been the biggest year in the life of Clubsound.

"I doubt if there is going to be a 50th anniversary too but we will continue to play as long as people want us to play," he added.

Clubsound will take to the stage of the Island Arts Centre on Monday December 27 at 8pm.
