Ballymena RBL issues call to annual meeting

THE Annual General Meeting of Ballymena Branch, Royal British Legion will be held on Wednesday, October 6 in The Services Club at 8pm and all Branch members are requested to make every effort to attend.

The coming year is a very important one for all Royal British Legion members as they will celebrate the RBL’s 90th anniversary.

Branch Secretary John Morrison says: “We have never been needed more in our 90 year history. Recent conflicts mean that more and more we're supporting the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces and their families, and we'll be there for them now and for the rest of their lives.

“We will need to raise 90m in 2011 to help us fund new and innovative services to help those serving today and we need your help to get there,” he said.

To celebrate the 90th Anniversary various events are being planned by Branches and at Province level.

“The Legion actively encourages all Ex-Service Personnel to join their Local Branch,” said John.

“We also welcome applications from anyone who supports the Aims and Ideals of the Legion, who can join as full Members.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of The Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal and we couldn't achieve all that we do without them.”

According to John, two of the most fulfilling volunteer roles the Legion has to offer are as Caseworkers and Visitors.

He said: “Helping us to deliver our Poppy Support services to those who have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, Volunteer Caseworkers and Visitors are the face of the Legion.

“All volunteers are offered free training and out-of-pocket expenses. Caseworkers and Visitors are subject to screening, as they are in contact with vulnerable people.

John said the Ballymena Branch wishes to thank the townspeople for their continued support of the Poppy Appeal.

“Your generosity in 2009/2010 raised 19,249.07,” said John, adding: “This is only the figure raised by Ballymena Branch. Broughshane and Cullybackey Branches conduct their own Branch Poppy Appeal Collections”.

The Northern Ireland total for 2009/10 was 1,057,123.03 and the National total is currently 33, 57047.00

“Without this amazing level of public support the welfare work carried out by The Legion would be dramatically reduced,” said John.
