‘Best Kept’ crown for Lisburn’s Garvey Court housing area

Lisburn’s Garvey Court has been crowned Best Kept Small Housing Area in 2014’s ‘Best Kept’ Awards, while Hillsborough, Moira and Lisburn itself claimed runners-up spots in their respective categories.

Independently run by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council, the Best Kept Towns, Villages and Housing Areas Awards programme recognises and rewards pride in appearance and environment.

Local representatives picked up their awards at a recent ceremony in Banbridge District Council offices,

Garvey Court chairman, Robert Henderson, said: “We are pleased to win this award; in fact it’s the fourth time we’ve won it over the years.

“Every resident gets involved with the upkeep of Garvey Court, making it a very pleasant place to live, and it is so wonderful for the residents to receive this recognition.”

Lisburn itself was named runner-up in the Best Kept Large Town category, Hillsborough in the Large Village category and Moira in the Small Town category.

Amenity Council Chair, Doreen Muskett, congratulated all involved.

“It takes a lot of effort and collaboration between volunteers, local councils and residents to maintain an aesthetically pleasing environment,” she said.

“These people should be very proud of their achievements as they provide a terrific service to their whole community.

“The places that have won Best Kept awards are clean and tidy, they lack litter and graffiti, the shop-fronts are well kept and the residential gardens are pretty.

“Many of them have beautiful floral displays in public areas and on the approach roads to the town.

“The value of this work can’t be underestimated; I have no doubt that it can have a wonderful effect on the health and wellbeing of local people.”

Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan, added his congratulations and applauded participants for for their dedication and hard work.
