Call for foster carers

A LOCAL foster carer has lent her support to an appeal from the Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) which is currently seeking foster carers.

Joan McGerrigle a foster carer in the Western Trust area said: “My husband Drew and I have been foster carers for over four years and we have fostered five children in short term, long term and emergency cases.

“Fostering has been an extremely rewarding experience for us and I would recommend to anyone thinking about fostering to go along to an information session to find out more.

“We have received on-going support and training throughout this time from the Western Trust’s Fostering Recruitment and Assessment Team and through our linked social worker.”

Two information sessions have been organised for Claudy and Londonderry, where the public can come along have a chat with fostering staff and find out more about becoming a foster carer.

Western Trust Fostering Recruitment and Assessment Team Social Work Manager, Dympna Brogan said: “The Trust is currently looking foster carer placements for a number of children in the Western Trust area. Fostering can be on a short-term basis or for the reminder of a young person’s childhood. We need ordinary people to provide a loving caring environment for children to thrive.

“If you have thought about fostering but are not sure if it will suit your circumstances, why not come along to an information evening, give us a call or email to get more information. We can call to your home, at your convenience to discuss your own particular circumstances.”
