Canadian police medal for Larne man

A Larne man who emigrated to Canada 27 years ago to join the police has been invested as a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces there.

Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Christopher McCord received the honour from the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, during a ceremony at the Citadelle of Québec on October 5.

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces honours a career of exceptional service or distinctive merit in the Canadian police forces, and recognizes the officer’s commitment to Canada.

Deputy Chief McCord, who is a former pupil of Larne Grammar School, was recognized for his significant contribution to policing in Canada.

Paying tribute to Mr McCord, Peel Police Chief Jennifer Evans stated: “I would like to congratulate Deputy Chief McCord on receiving the Order of Merit of the Police Forces. Deputy Chief McCord has always worked hand in hand with the men and women of this organization along with members of our community to help us achieve our vision of a safer community.”

Mr McCord’s proud parents Tom and Violet, who now live in Ballynure, told the Times: “He has done very well, this is his fifth medal as he already had his RUC and King George medals.

“This award is the same as the British Empire Medal here and it was given to him by the Queen’s representative, but he was over here a month ago and was pretty modest about it,” they concluded.
